Review of Irving Kolodin in the Sun

"Lucia" Is Sung At Metropolitan

Ordinarily an opera in which the auditor's attention is occupied largely by the distraught heroine, last night's performance of "Lucia di Lammermoor" at the Metropolitan Opera House found the audience directing at least a partial curiosity to Edgardo, impersonated by Nino Martini. This tenor, with his debut a week behind him, had noticeable difficulties in his first act duet with Lucia ("Verranno la sull' aure") the voice being constrained and devoid of color, but he achieved some betterment as he progressed, his portion of the sextet being smoothly sung.

Lily Pons delivered a rather erratic performance of Lucia's music, passages of fine clarity of tone and accuracy of pitch alternating with others in which neither of these qualities was saliently present. Some of her best singing was to be heard in the intricacies of the mad scene, which was managed with a gratifying display of taste. Mr. Martini contributed little to the dramatic credibility of her plight, neither his singing nor his acting lending conviction to the contract scene, his voice lacking the vigor to suggest Edgardo's denunciation of Lucia.

Giuseppe de Luca presented an action of distinction, skillfully vocalized, and Leon Rothier impersonated the aged Raymond. The conductor was Vincenzo Bellezza.
