Review signed M. D. L. in Musical America

Mario del Monaco sang his first Don José of the season in this performance. Lately, Mr. Del Monaco has been showing signs of an increasing interest in the refinements of musicianship. He expends more care with pianissimos and shapes phrasing with more interest. Undoubtedly, the tenor felt the role of Don José intensely, but the more intense he became the less control he maintained. Still, his is a thrilling voice.

Rise Stevens was the Carmen, and on this occasion her performance seemed a bit too planned. Lucine Amara, once again displayed her beautiful voice in role of Micaela. Frank Guarrera offered a well-portrayed Escamillo. Max Rudolf conducted with an exactitude that perhaps accounted for the rigidity and lack of spontaneity in the performance.
