Miss Peters in 'Figaro' At the Met
Those who sang their roles for the first time this season in Saturday night's repetition of Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" at the Metropolitan Opera House were Roberta Peters as Susanna, Martial Singher as the Count and Rosalind Elias as Cherubino. Another difference from the previous vocal line-up would have been the Countess of Victoria de los Angeles, but the Spanish soprano was indisposed and Lisa Della Casa reappeared in her stead.
These shifts in the cast did not affect the admirable musical proportion and faithfulness of style and prevailing ensemble spirit which marks the current production of this Mozartean masterpiece under Erich Leinsdorf's discerning conductorship.
Individual characterizations were also convincing. Miss Peters was dramatically persuasive; her singing, pleasing despite a slight edge at times in the earlier scenes, also mirrored the moods of the role. Mr. Singher provided some of his best singing of recent years in his authoritative, discerning and not overacted impersonation; Miss Elias was in commendable voice for her expressively sung "Voi che sapete."
Miss Della Casa again sang with notable artistry. Cesare Siepi reappeared as Figaro with Fernando Corena as Bartolo and Regina Resnik, Norman Kelley, Mildred Allen and Lorenzo Alvary among the others in the cast.
