Review of Irving Kolodin in the Saturday Review

The Metropolitan's search for an acceptable Queen of the Night continued when Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte" had its first matinee performance of the current season. The opportunity this time went to the Canadian-born Colette Boky, who has had considerable European experience. Despite an expectable amount of difficulty in the unfamiliar surroundings, Miss Boky delivered a well-focused, reasonably assured version of the character's first-act aria. The musical objectives, however, were not distinguished (allowing for stresses and strains), the quality of the voice was somewhat harsh. Of the others in the familiar cast directed by Joseph Rosenstock, George Shirley commended himself for the strength and finesse of his Tamino.
