Review of Martin Mayer in Opera (UK)

November also saw the revival of last year's clumsy pink "L'Elisir d'Amore," with Ruth Ann Swenson and Stanford Olsen instead of Battle and Pavarotti, and it was better on all counts. It was especially good to hear young Olsen singing his own repertory again. For all the battering it took in "Puritani" and "Rosenkavalier," Olsen's is still a voice of remarkable sweetness. Swenson was not so perfect as she had been last year as Gilda - she sang a difficult fioritura in the second act and made two sounds I'm sure she would have loved to recall - but she filled the house with her presence far beyond the scope of most Adinas, and except for those two notes sang handsomely. Both are also good comic actors, as is Gino Quilico, whose Belcore became even more amusing when his pants split as he approached Adina, who almost, but not quite, took it all in stride. Edoardo Muller in the pit created a true Donizetti bounce for everyone, though he rushed "Udite o rustici."
