New book and English dialogue by Betty Comden and Adolph Green

[The opera was performed in the original German, with spoken dialogue delivered in English. Comden and Green were credited for "New Book and English dialogue"; their revision included the renaming of several roles. In this production Dr. Falke is Dr. Fledermaus and Frank is Friedrich Mittelmann; The evening begins with the opening bars of Pagliacci; Dr. Fledermaus comes before the curtain and corrects the maestro's mistake. He then explains why he has drawn his patients (he is really Sigmund Freud) into his elaborate joke on Eisenstein. Eisenstein had forbiddiden Rosalinde to continue her sessions with Fledermaus, calling him a hoax. The jailer Frosch is an unemployed actor who works in the jail between shows, the last being twenty-five years ago.]
