In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine which had been launched the previous week, the cast and chorus appeared in front of the curtain before the opera began and performed the Ukrainian national anthem with the orchestra. Maestro Nézet-Séguin conducted.
[This performance marked the first time the Met had given the opera in its original language, French. Verdi's 1866/1867 original version was used with some alterations. The Fontainebleau scene was used,, but without the woodcutters' chorus, similarly to the 2010 Hytner production, but in contrast to the 1979 one by John Dexter which included the woodcutters.. The ballet "La Peregrina" was not included. The "Lacrymosa" section in Act IV and the Elisabeth/Eboli duet were included, and the ending was an abridged version of the original 1867 "quiet" ending.]
