'La Bohème' With Alda and Gigli at Metropolitan

The fourteenth week of the opera season at the Metropolitan Opera House began last evening with a performance of Puccini's "La Bohème," This melodious and most popular work by its composer was heard by a large and brilliant audience. The presentation was an admirable one and the applause was genuine and plentiful.

According to previous announcement, Mme. Frances Alda sang the Mimi, for the second time within two weeks in place of Mme. Delia Reinhardt, who has not recovered from her cold. Mme. Alda was in good voice and gave her familiar impersonation of the appealing little Bohemian of the attic with sympathy, grace and an unaffected style.

Beniamino Gigli as the poet Rodolfo again lent his beautiful voice to the musical phrases of the score. He was especially stirring in his delivery of the "Che gelida manina" and won much applause. The other principal singers were Miss Yvonne d'Arle as Musetta, Mr. Scotti as Marcello, Mr. Mardones as Colline and Mr. d'Angelo as Schaunard.

Mr. Papi conducted the performance, which, incidentally, served as one of the "coming of age" hearings the opera is having in its history this season at the Metropolitan. "La Bohème" was first given at the house on December 26, 1901.
