Review of Pitts Sanborn in the New York Telegram

Edward Johnson in 'Pagliacci'

That Edward Johnson, the Canadian tenor of wide experience in Italy, has a firm place in the esteem of New York operagoers is an assured fact. But he has not yet been engaged to sing throughout an entire season at the Metropolitan. His first appearance in that house for this season was to have taken place in "Romeo et Juliette" on Wednesday night, but a cold from which the tenor was suffering postponed the return until last night. Then he appeared as Canio in "Pagliacci."

New York has known several effective Canios from de Lucia, the creator of the part here, on. Of course the Canio of them all for many years was Enrico Caruso. Now Carusoless, the Metropolitan tries one and then another tenor in the part.
